RailLexic is a multilingual technical dictionary for terms from the railway industry .
editor
The dictionary is published and updated by the International Union of Railways (UIC). A terminology working group headed by a terminologist employed by UIC works within this framework . The group consists of 30 contact persons with 20 source languages from 22 countries. RailLexic is created in cooperation with the Organization for the Cooperation of the Railways (OSJD) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
history
The forerunner was a reference work called the “AGCS dictionary”, which emerged from a joint effort between UIC and OSJD. RailLexic began its work based on German and French , not English . It was only later that the UIC General Assembly decided that all technical documents of the organization should have English as the source language, which is then translated into German and French. Today RailLexic covers 23 languages, the most recent being Turkish in 2017 .
was standing
RailLexic is a database that is available today (as of 2018) in version 5.0. The dictionary contains not only translations , but also explanations of grammar , meanings and usage of the individual terms. RailLexic contains 11,360 terms and thousands of variants in the three working languages of the UIC (French, German and English), in German a total of 20,241 variants (as of 2017). The 23 languages currently in use are:
Preparations are currently being made to incorporate Chinese into RailLexic .
Changing the dictionary to English as the reference language results in the problem that some of the activities in the railway sector in English-speaking countries do not take place, for example in high-speed traffic or with automatic lane-changing systems , and corresponding technical terms therefore do not exist. Another problem is that the English language exists in numerous regionally different variants. In addition, the experts rate the French and German-language technical terms as more precise than the English-language ones , so that in some cases these are used as the basis for RailLexic .
Projects
The aim is to make RailLexic available on smartphones .
