Savitribai Phule

Savitribai Phule ( Marathi सावित्रीबाई फुले Sāvitrībāī Phule ; born January 3, 1831 in Naigaon , † March 10, 1897 in Poona ) was an Indian social reformer, poet and educational pioneer .

Savitribai was born into a farming family in Naigaon, a small village in the Satara district , and married at the age of nine. Together with her husband Jyotirao Phule , she founded and ran the first school for girls in India from 1848. In 2014 the University of Pune was renamed Savitribai Phule Pune University after her in recognition of her services, especially for the development of women's education in India . She was committed to the rights of women and the casteless . Savitribai, who herself remained childless, also adopted children from unwanted pregnancies and worked together with her adopted son, who had become a doctor, in the care of sick children. In this activity she finally became a victim of an epidemic herself and died in 1897 after continuing the joint work Satya Shodhak Samaj after the death of her husband in 1890.
