The Scan Polaris class is a type ship class for the heavy transport of oversized and heavy goods - such as B. boiler systems. The ships can pick up their cargo using their own loading gear as well as a tailgate with a load capacity of 300 t. Loading and unloading via the tailgate - in the so-called Ro / Ro procedure, Ro / Ro stands for roll on / roll off - allows heavy goods to be driven directly into the hull - without further loading.
This type of ship was further developed and two ships lengthened by 26 m (Scan Arctic and Scan Bothnia) were built. From 1999 four new ships, also 126 m long, but with 150 t cranes instead of 100 t, were delivered by the Peene shipyard ( Scan Atlantic , Scan Hansa , Scan Germania , Scan Finlandia ). In 2003, the Scan Brasil with 240 t cranes was put into service as the last ship of this type to date .
For the direct loading of heavy goods on deck, two Liebherr cranes with a load capacity of 100 t and a radius of 18 m are available, which are able to load a piece of heavy goods up to 200 t in tandem - that is, coupled with a heavy goods traverse or individually.
