Scaphiophryne madagascariensis is a species of amphibian in the family -mouthed (Microhylidae).

features

The species reaches a length of 55 millimeters. The upper side of the body is olive-colored and has large, dark, light-lined island spots, which in turn enclose numerous small, light-colored island spots. The underside is white with scattered blackish spots. The front head is short and rounded. The canthus rostralis is blunt and the rein region slopes obliquely and is slightly deepened. The interorbital space is as wide as an upper eyelid . The eardrum is invisible. The fingers and toes are moderately long and pointed. The first finger is slightly shorter than the second. The toes are webbed for a third of their length. The sub-articular cusps are very indistinct. The medial metatarsal cusp is large and shovel-shaped, a lateral metatarsal cusp is missing. With the hind leg pushed forward against the body, the tarsometatarsal joint reaches the shoulder. The skin is smooth on top and slightly granular below.

Occurrence

Scaphiophryne madagascariensis occurs in Madagascar from the Ankaratra massif to the Andringitra mountains on the east side of the mountains at altitudes of 1300 to 2000 meters. There it can be found both in forests and above the tree line .

Systematics

The species was first described in 1882 by George Boulenger as Calophrynus madagascariensis . RMA Blommers-Schlösser and CP Blanc placed the species in the genus Scaphiophryne in 1991 .

Scaphiophryne madagascariensis is classified by the IUCN as "Near Threatened" (potentially endangered).
