The Schänzlebrücke , also known as the New Rhine Bridge or, more rarely, the Europe Bridge, spans the Seerhein in Constance . The bridge belongs as part of the B 33n to the Federal Road 33 (in this case European route ) and connects Konstanz directly with the Swiss motorway, A7, and Kreuzlingen . It also connects the Konstanz industrial area on the right bank of the Rhine with the Paradies district on the left bank of the Rhine (Constance) . It has two lanes, one hard shoulder and one cycle and sidewalk for each lane.

Emergence

The second Rhine crossing in Constance (after the Old Rhine Bridge ), with a connection to the Swiss border, was originally built as a bridge on the federal motorway 81 to relieve the inner-city through traffic. The invitation to tender was in autumn 1974, construction began in August 1975 and the bridge was opened to traffic on July 1, 1980. However, there was only a provisional connection to the urban road network from July 1983. The final completion of the bridge with all dams and ramp bridges to connect the new B 33 on the right bank of the Rhine with the new border crossing, on the route of a bypass route planned in the 1930s, could only take place 27 years after the road was opened in May 2007 due to numerous objections from residents.

construction

The main bridge is a 304.9 m long prestressed concrete structure with three openings and spans of 85.35 m in the two edge fields and 134.20 m in the middle field. In the longitudinal direction, the continuous beam is available as a building system. The 37.0 m wide construction consists of two superstructures, each with a single-cell hollow box cross-section with a box width of 9.6 m and a variable construction height. The box height is 8.0 m above the pillars , 3.5 m in the middle of the river and 4.5 m at the ends of the bridge. The construction of the superstructures was carried out in cantilever construction .

The bridge piers have a deep foundation . Because of the thick layers of clay with a soft to stiff consistency, bored piles with unusual lengths of up to 63 m were necessary. The construction was carried out telescoped, that is, it was started with a pipe with a diameter of 1.63 m, into which a second pipe with a diameter of 1.5 m was inserted after a drilling depth of 21 m, followed by a third with a diameter of 1.4 after 47 m m diameter. Finally, the long piles were given a foot broadening of 2.8 m for sufficient load-bearing capacity.

A total of 8500 m³ of concrete , 1250 t of reinforcing steel and 520 t of prestressing steel were used. The construction costs amounted to 16.4 million DM, adjusted for inflation this corresponds to today's 18 million euros.

All bridges are built with rigid foam . At the northern bridgehead, this had partially given way in 2008, one year after commissioning, and had to be rebuilt as part of the warranty .

Park + Ride

There is a park-and-ride car park under the northern bridgehead, which provides 500 parking spaces and is connected to the bus service every 15 minutes. Vehicles can park here partially protected from rain and snow.
