Sharpness (psychoacoustics)
The sharpness as an essential component of the timbre is a perception variable in psychoacoustics . It can be derived from the results of experiments in which test subjects arrange sounds reproducibly along a scale from dull to sharp - regardless of pitch , loudness and roughness .
The sharpness is measured in the acum unit .
In sound and recording technology
The sharpness of a sound is acoustically characterized by the envelope of the sound spectrum . It is irrelevant whether the spectrum is noisy or continuous or discrete, e.g. B. consists of harmonic components.
The sharpness increases
- for a narrow-band sound spectrum with the center frequency
- with only one-sided band limitation with the lower or - much more strongly - with the upper limit frequency .
In addition to the limit frequencies, the shape of the envelope has an influence on the sharpness of the sound.
