Rifle Brotherhood St. Fabian and Sebastian 1653 Selm
The Schützenbruderschaft St. Fabian and Sebastian 1653 Selm e. V. was re-established as the town's rifle club after the Second World War. On the old Königskette there is a reference to the first shooting festival in 1653. In 2003 the 350th anniversary could be celebrated. The naming of the two saints Fabian and Sebastian goes back to the local patron saints of the city of Selm, to whose patronage the parish church of St. Fabian and Sebastian, today called Friedenskirche (Selm) , was subordinate.
Every three years, alternating with the other two Selm shooting clubs, the Bürgererschützengilde Selm-Beifang 1735 e. V. and the shooting club Ondrup-Westerfelde 1888 e. V., a large shooting festival on its own festival ground. The last one took place in August 2013, the next in 2016. In preparation for each shooting festival, a few weeks beforehand there is a march to a farm with gypsum bird shooting.
Relationship to the old village church of St. Fabian and Sebastian, today's Friedenskirche (Selm)
The festschrift for the 350th anniversary in 2003 tells us about the relationship between the Schützenbruderschaft St. Fabian and Sebastian 1653 Selm e. V. to the former village church St. Fabian and Sebastian, today's Church of Peace:
"When Emil Müller in 1959 as pastor came to Selm, he made sure that the old village church, which stood empty for over 50 years now as" should get Peace Church "a new task. The close relations of Selmer Schutterij St. Fabian and Sebastian to The reason for the old church is that they venerate the same patron saints . This has the effect that on the part of the Sagittarius Brotherhood, the promotion of all work to restore the old church was taken for granted. That it was not just good words and wishes are also in favor The altar , the altar cross and the grave of the unknown soldier in the Friedenskirche were a constant symbol for the coming generations . They were donated by the Schützenbruderschaft St. Fabian and Sebastian. Memorable and unforgettable for the community of St. Ludger and the Schützenbruderschaft St. Fabian and Sebastian was that evening hour of February 14, 1965, in which the coffin of the Unknown Soldier, from Of the brotherhood that was brought into the churches. To this day, the Friedenskirche represents an important point of reference for the Schützenbruderschaft. This is underlined not least by the fact that a considerable amount is donated annually by the Schützenbruderschaft for the preservation of the Friedenskirche. Every year the Schützenbruderschaft meets on the feast of the patrons Fabian and Sebastian for the commemorative mass for the deceased Schützenbrothers and their families in the Friedenskirche. Socializing is also not neglected at the patronage festival. According to an old tradition, there is a fair after going to church. "

The guard
The guard is the fourth group within the brotherhood, alongside the board of directors, the officer corps and the two companies. The guard consists of the younger Sagittarius brothers. It has a strong life of its own and celebrates the shooting festival longer and more persistently than everyone else. In contrast to all other shooters, the guard carries a wooden rifle and white uniform trousers during the day.
In addition to the above-mentioned program items, there is also the practice evening on the Friday before the shooting festival. The guard then joins the officer corps and the board of directors in the marquee, whose tent is currently being removed. After everything is over for most shooters on Monday, things are only just beginning for the watch. The rifle festival Tuesday is all about the guard rifle festival. After a hearty breakfast with a guardsman, the guard marches to the new king and other rifle brothers. Then the guard moves to their own bird meadow, where the plaster bird shooting begins with the participation of some officers and the new king. Usually the entire guard takes part. After the king's shot, the new king is proclaimed with queen and court and in his honor a flag is raised and a march past. The guard festival usually ends late in the evening. On the Wednesday after, some guards meet for fish dinner in a restaurant to end the days. This shows the stamina the guards have to have for the rifle festival: They celebrate six days in a row!
