Shooting festival near the train station - Observations on the village is a documentary film by Dieter Ertel and Georg Friedel from 1961, which was broadcast as part of the television series “ Signs of the Times ”.

background

In the times of the economic miracle , Dieter Ertel and Georg Friedel documented the local shooting festival of the "Schützengesellschaft von 1866" in the Lower Saxony community of Kreiensen . The marches of the rifle society, the beer-loving village people who celebrate with them and the drunken chairman are highlighted in the film. The event is commented on in a deliberately ironic form. The two documentarists belonged to the so-called Stuttgart School . With the chosen ironic documentary style, they wanted to “predispose the viewer to judgment”, that is, to lead the viewer to a critical judgment. The marching music and the uniforms reminded the young filmmakers of the Nazi era .

The SDR film was first broadcast on September 1, 1961. The broadcast led to public indignation. Headlines in German newspapers read, for example: "Shooters shoot at the TV screen - a Lower Saxony village feels its honor has been touched by Stuttgart television" and "400,000 shooters are offended - together with oxen on the TV screen". The film was last repeated on July 6, 2013 in the series Gutes von Yesterday auf on rbb television .
