Buildings and premises

In the city park Schützenhof there is a large hall with a raised stage for performances. The hall has no permanent fixtures, so it can be furnished in different ways. With row seating, it offers space for 850 people. Tables in different arrangements, buffets or exhibition stands can also be set up. Unfurnished, up to 1000 people can take part in dance events or standing parties. One of the most important users is the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, which performs its concerts there. The small hall next door for up to 200 people is 270 square meters. It can be used separately or connected to the large hall via wide folding doors . The winter garden for up to 90 guests is located between the large hall and the park.

The 180 square meter foyer can also be used for events or included in the events in the other rooms. The café-restaurant to the right of the main entrance was originally called Elisabeth-Café and was later given the name Parkstuben. It offers space for 90 people and can also be booked for private groups. There is an outdoor terrace facing the Schützenhofpark. On the upper floor is the 110 square meter Hanseatic Room, which can also accommodate 90 people. The cellar is hardly used. Among other things, there is an old bowling alley there.

The office and studio of the Northwest German Philharmonic are located in an extension on the east side. On the opposite side of the Stiftbergstrasse is the shooting range of the shooting society.

history

In 1859 the Herford rifle club, which had been founded in 1832, acquired parts of the Langenberg in order to build a rifle yard with a shooting range, music pavilion and farm building there from 1860. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the Schützenhof was used as a military hospital. The great hall was inaugurated on July 30, 1898.

During the First World War there were several military hospitals in Herford from August 1914 in orphanages, hospitals and also in the Schützenhof, where up to 250 wounded were accommodated. It was not until the beginning of 1919 that the Schützengesellschaft got the building back in a desolate condition, so that it had to be renovated. In 1932 the shooting range was expanded and in 1936 the Elisabeth Café was inaugurated, which in the following years became a restaurant. During the Second World War, Wehrmacht soldiers were quartered in the Schützenhof from 1939.

In 1941 the Stadtgarten und Schützenhof GmbH was founded, in which the city took over 51 percent of the shares. The Schützengesellschaft also holds around a quarter of the shares in the GmbH.

After the city was taken over by the American Armed Forces in early April 1945, the Schützenhof was also confiscated and the archives and flags of the Schützengesellschaft destroyed. The assets were confiscated and the association was dissolved. In December 1948, the seizure of the Schützenhof was lifted, so that in 1949 a rifle festival could be held again. The property was released in 1952.

From 1950 to 1961 the small hall was used as a makeshift theater. In 1959 the Schützenhof was redesigned and the Elisabeth Café was rebuilt.

At the beginning of 1964, the Herford beat group Jaguars began to organize concert afternoons in the Schützenhof. At the end of the year there were additional groups. In January 1965 the name Jaguar Club was first used for these events . When the Jaguars broke up and the lease in the Schützenhof was terminated, the Jaguar Club was opened on January 20, 1966 in the former Scala cinema on Mindener Strasse.

In the following time the Schützenhof was renamed Stadtpark Schützenhof.

In 1965, 1999 and 2019 the Westphalian Rifle Day was held in the Schützenhof and in the entire city of Herford . In 1973 the German Shooting Day took place there.

Parts of the building were renovated in 1980 and 1995 and from 2005 to 2007.
