Shafik Allam

Schafik Allam (born December 9, 1928 in Banha , Egypt) is a German Egyptologist .

Allam studied history at the University of Cairo , then Egyptology and received his MA degree in 1952. He then worked for two years as an assistant at the university there. Then he went to Göttingen and received his doctorate there in 1960 with the work Contributions to the Hathor cult (until the end of the Middle Kingdom) . As a result, he also studied law. Then he went to Tübingen in 1961, where he held the position of assistant at the Egyptological Institute. After studying at Oxford (1963–1964), he completed his habilitation in Tübingen in 1968 with the works Hieratic Ostraka and Papyri from the Ramesside Period and The procedural law in the ancient Egyptian workers' settlement of Deir el-Medineh . For further research he stayed in Paris from 1969 to 1971, where he also taught as maître de conférences at the Sorbonne . In 1974 he was appointed professor of Egyptology in Tübingen.

His research focuses on non-literary texts, especially Egyptian legal history and administration. In 2010 he set up the Foundation for Egyptology , with which research into Egyptian legal history is to be promoted.

In 2011, his achievements were recognized with a commemorative publication .
