The Schallhaus is a former garden pavilion and concert building in Rudolstadt (Thuringia). It is part of the complex of Heidecksburg Castle , the former residential palace of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt . As a preserved acoustic hall of the Thuringian residences and churches from the 18th century, it is a rarity in its double function as a garden house and orchestra, according to the German Foundation for Monument Protection . The Schallhaus is owned by the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation . The renovation work on the building was completed in 2020.

history

The Schallhaus was built at the end of the 17th century as a massive garden pavilion in an octagonal shape at the intersection of the path axes on the lower of the three palace terraces. Pilasters in the Corinthian order and arch divided the facade . The interior received a circumferential gallery .

In 1729/1730 the building was given a curly slate hood after damage to the roof had occurred. The domed room became a podium for musicians. The curved shell and the particularly hard plaster amplified the sound, led it into the interior at ground level and created special acoustics. In the 18th century, the Schallhaus became an important part of courtly cultural life with its concerts.

The building was redesigned during the classicism period . The portals in the east and west were replaced by windows. The interior was painted blue and decorated with ornamental ribbons.

The building lost its importance in the 19th century. In the 20th century it was used as a sheepfold during the GDR era . In 1991, after the period of decay, the renovation began with the repair of the roof. A generous, earmarked donation from a sponsor to the German Foundation for Monument Protection, who discovered the Schallhaus on a trip through Thuringia, has made further fundamental work possible since 2018. The Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation and the Schallhaus und Schlossgarten Friends' Association provided additional funds.

In May 2019, the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation awarded the Schallhaus and Schlossgarten Association the Christian August Vulpius Prize. In doing so, she paid tribute to the association's commitment to renovating the building.

The renovation and restoration work was completed in spring 2020. In addition to the slate dome, the walls and the gallery were restored. The total cost was 610,000 euros. The Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation waived the originally planned opening event with a concert because of the COVID-19 pandemic and instead had a film made about the Schallhaus.
