Great Synagogue in Bels (between 1905 and 1910)

On the recommendation of the seer of Lublin, Shalom was appointed rabbi in Belz. After Horowitz's death in 1815, Shalom was recognized as a tzaddik. He had a spacious Bet Midrash (house of study) built in Bels , whereupon thousands of Hasidim, including rabbis and famous tzaddikim, flocked to Belz and the place became a center of Hasidism in Galicia . Many legends tell of Shalom's miracles. He was also considered an important Talmudist and emphasized the importance of the Talmudic study. He was active in public affairs, tried as a spokesman for the Galician Jews to improve their economic situation and was an opponent of the Haskala , the Jewish enlightenment. Excerpts from his teachings were collected together with legends and stories from his life and published in the text Dower Shalom (1910). Numerous descendants of Shalom were also tzaddikim, including his son-in-law Chenich von Olesko and his son Yehoshua Rokeach (1825-1894).
