life and work
As a student at the Moscow Art Theater , Prokhorenko was discovered by the film director Grigory Chuchrai for his war epic The Ballad of the Soldier . Tschuchrai selected the then 17-year-old on the basis of a photograph and cast her for the role of the modest and fearful Shura , which she later made internationally known. The production won an award at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1960 and was nominated for an Oscar .
After this success she switched to the WGIK film school and studied under Sergei Gerasimow and Tamara Makarowa until 1964 . After the first successes, her film career increasingly stagnated; she was often committed to the role of the simple, dreamy girl and found it difficult to break away from her image. Nevertheless, with increasing acting experience, Prokhorenko matured into a character actress in Soviet film; Occupied several times in film adaptations of Russian literary classics.
In 1988 Shanna Prokhorenko was honored as a People's Artist of the RSFSR .
