Who marries whom? , also Balsaminow's Marriage (original title: Женитьба Бальзаминова , Schenitba Balsaminowa ) is a Soviet feature film directed by Konstantin Woinow from 1965 based on the drama What One Is Looking For , He Finds by Alexander Ostrowski from 1861.

action

Misha Balsaminow, a minor civil servant, a mother's boy and a quiet stepper, dreams of a rich bride, of high office and dignity and of a rich life. Only he is not able to initiate that. He earns 120 rubles a year, on which he and his mother live, and the maid also has to pay for it. So it is just right for him to get in touch with a matchmaker who is acting on behalf of Kapotschka Neujedenowa, whom Balsaminow has been sneaking around for weeks. She would be a good match, she inherited 300,000 silver rubles from her father, is in her prime and she still looks beautiful. The young man dresses very nicely and has extra curls twisted in his hair to make a particularly good impression on the first visit.

Misha, who appears with his mother, is eagerly awaited in the Neujedenowa's house. Kapotschka is completely excited and has asked a friend to support her, who points out to Misha to be brave. After Kapotschka appears to have expressed some negative opinions about the men, she quickly gets down to business and wants to kiss him. Unfortunately, at this very moment, her mother comes into the room to meet her future son-in-law. Her uncle, who was snoring up until now, is also waking up. Now he takes on the task of listening to the suitor and has to find out that he is not only not a spiritual lamp, but that he also has no money. It is of no interest to him whether his niece will be happy, because he finds it more important to invest her money profitably than to lose it through marriage. To say goodbye, he invites the Balsaminows to visit them again, because without stupid it is too boring for them.

But the matchmaker does not give up and already has a new candidate for Balsaminow. But he doesn't want to anymore, because through the acquaintance with the military member Lukjan Lukjanowitsch Tschebakow he has drawn new hope for a marriage. On his behalf, he brings a letter to the older of two sisters, whom he wants to kidnap, because her brothers keep her away from all men. The younger one feels the same, which is why it is intended for Misha. So that the jealous brothers let him in, he is disguised as a shoemaker who is supposed to repair the ladies' shoes. After receiving the letter, the brothers suddenly appear and Misha has to flee. By jumping over the fence, he meets her neighbor Domna Evstignejewna Belotelowa, who is currently visiting from the matchmaker and who is also looking for a man to dispel her boredom. After several intense kisses, she is of the opinion that Balsaminow would suit her well and instructs the agent to arrange everything, although Misha has something to object to her corpulent figure. But for him a marriage with this wealthy lady is out of the question, because he has already taken a liking to the younger sister Raissa, who also kissed him and who he therefore also wants to kidnap that evening. But when he and Lukyan Chebakov arrived at the sisters that evening, he had not prepared anything for a kidnapping. The older one disappears with Chebakov and the younger one only says that she will also look for a member of the military and that she only flirted with Balsaminov out of boredom.

In the next few days the matchmaker contacted him and reported that he had impressed the beautiful maiden, the neighbor of the two sisters he recently met, with his kisses. If he wants, he can marry her tomorrow, which is why she congratulates him warmly. A big wedding is celebrated and Misha tells his mother that now that he is rich, he can also be called a fool. Although he notices in the wedding carriage that his wife is in charge, he is happy.
