The Weisel Schanze is a defunct Niederungsburg , a fortification that has not been dated to date. It is located in the forest about 2.4 kilometers east of Weisel in the Rhineland-Palatinate part of the Taunus in the Rhein-Lahn district about 50 meters northwest of the L 339.
description
It is a circular hill, one third of which is looped in the southwest due to road and path construction.
In the center of the complex there is a plateau with a diameter of around 10.50 meters, which is delimited by a wall. This area is approx. 2 meters above the surrounding forest area. All around this plateau or the wall there is an approximately 4.50 meter wide berm , which in turn is followed by a 7.50 meter wide and 2 meter deep trench . In front of the ditch is another 1 meter high, 4 meter wide wall . The ditch in particular has a steep slope.
On the plateau of the complex there were remnants of tiled hut clay , which is an indication that a building consisting of a wattle wall construction was standing there, which burned down.
function
The function of the system is unknown. It could have been a medieval moth (tower hill castle), but a function as a watch tower cannot be ruled out. Evidence for the latter would be the district names Thurm , which was still valid in 1879 , in which the facility is located, and Gebück , the name of the district adjoining to the east. The system could have been part of a Landwehr construction .
Cohausen suspects a connection with the siege of Gutenfels Castle in 1504, which, however, is six kilometers away.
A connection with the Roman period appears unlikely , although the overall system is very similar to the Limes watchtowers . The steep representation of the trench speaks against this assignment. In contrast, the facility is too small for a ski jump from the Thirty Years' War .
Monument protection
The castle stable of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Monument Protection Act. Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
