The Gutenfels Castle is a spur castle at 200  m above sea level. NHN high rock spur 110 meters above the town of Kaub in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is a rarely well-preserved example of Hohenstaufen castle building .

history

Gutenfels Castle was built as Kaub ( Cube ) castle from 1220, perhaps on behalf of the empire. Already in 1252 it was besieged unsuccessfully by William of Holland . In 1277 the lords of Falkenstein transferred the castle and town of Kaub to the Count Palatine as a fief. By 1289 they sold their possessions in and around Kaub with the castle to Count Palatine Ludwig .

In the 14th century the curtain wall was built and the attack side was provided with a kennel . At the same time the plateau of the western bailey was built.

After Landgrave Wilhelm von Hessen besieged the castle for 39 days without success in 1504, the Elector Ludwig the Peacemaker of the Palatinate renamed it Gutenfels . He had it restored and expanded in 1508 (southern Zwinger). There are suspicions that the Weisel ski jump is connected to this siege.

The roundabout in the west, with a basement, dates from the time of the Thirty Years War . During this time the castle was conquered several times.

Until 1803 it was the quarters of a disabled crew. In 1793 handed over to the French without a fight, Napoleon had it blown up in 1806.

After Friedrich Gustav Habel had saved the castle from demolition by buying it in 1833 , it was rebuilt from 1889–1892 according to plans by the architect Gustav Walter, with the original structure and ruin character largely retained.

On December 31, 2006, the castle went into private ownership and was extensively renovated. Up until then, the castle complex was used as a hotel.

The long fallow vineyard terraces at the foot of the castle have been repaired since 2008 and replanted with vines. They are part of the Middle Rhine wine-growing region .

investment

In the castle it is a well-preserved front tower castle with 35-meter square keep and an approximately 22 x 8 meter three-storey residential buildings. The inner castle , which was about 21.60 by 21.10 meters in size, was protected by the outer bailey , a kennel and a curtain wall .
