The castle is around 55 m above sea level. NN. Its name probably comes from Felshalde , referring to the Heisterer Ley behind the castle .

description

The castle complex is an ornate house with its slate-covered hip roof made of natural Unkeler quarry stone .

history

The exact date of construction of Vilszelt Castle is unclear. The first documented mention of the complex dates from 1290, when Vilzelt was transferred to the Teutonic Order by an Arnold zu Unkel .

Evidently Vilzelt later belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne , because the Cologne Cathedral Chapter established the seat of a bailiff there. Members of the noble families "von Oetgenbach" (also "von Uetgenbach ") and "von dem Werde (r)", who are related by marriage, initially appear as bailiffs .

On May 20, 1449 Adam von Oetgenbach and his wife Maria sold the castle to Wilhelm von Nesselrode-Ehreshoven, who was subsequently also enfeoffed with the castle of Kurköln .

Between 1713 and 1716 the von Nesselrode family had the bridge over the moat renewed by the Dutch master Matys Groenlant and a handsome portal built by Werner Riegel .

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the building was owned by the von Nesselrode family, but it was mostly inhabited by tenants. The sculptor Walter Howard spent his childhood there and planned to set up a private music school in the "rather rough, square block" .

In 1953 Countess Marie Luise Agathe, who married Hesso Prinz zu Leiningen in 1933 , sold the property to Baron Markwart von Sobeck-Werder. Thus, after almost 455 years, the castle came back into the hands of that family, which is documented as one of the first Vogt families of Vilzelt.

Today Vilzelt Castle is used privately.
