history

The Burg zur Leyen , as it was originally called, dates from the early 13th century. It was the headquarters of the "Herren zur Leyen" and was committed to the Archbishopric of Cologne . In 1239 a Hofgut zu Oberwillscheid is attested as a fief of the "Herren zur Leyen". In 1341 it is owned by the knight Johann von der Leyen . In 1420 the von der Leyen family died out in the male line and ownership passed to Rolman von Dattenberg . In 1439, through the marriage of his daughter Anna von Dattenberg , the castle becomes the property of Dittrich von Monreal , whose descendants can hold the property until 1623. In 1475 the castle was destroyed by troops of Charles the Bold of Burgundy during the clashes of the Cologne collegiate feud . In 1609, the castle is owned by Johann Adam von Hoheneck as the "Strong Veste" . In 1615, Elector Ferdinand of Cologne certified that Eberhard Heinrich von Hoheneck was enfeoffed with the "Monreal'schen Guts" alone. In 1623 he sells the castle and all of its feudal estates, childless, to the electoral council and court controller Georg von Gerolt , who settles in Linz on the Rhine . In 1624 Georg von Gerolt was enfeoffed with the castle by the Elector. In 1887 the family died out with Friedrich Josef von Gerolt and the castle became the property of the "Rheinisches Heim" settlement association. In 1912, when Linzhausen was incorporated into the district of Linz, the castle became the property of the city of Linz six years later. 1924 Vice Consul Franz Delden acquired the ruin and leaves them under the direction of Heinrich Reinhardt to 1927, taking into account existing buildings as Castle House in its current form rebuilt.

Use after the new building

In 1936 the castle goes to St. Maria in the Kupfergasse in Cologne, who set up a rest and retirement home for their sisters there. In 1960 it becomes a "castle hotel" for relaxation and spa treatment. The castle then changes hands several times. Inadequate usage options let the building deteriorate. In 1998 the castle became the property of the Burg Ockenfels GmbH customer center and, after renovations, became the presentation and administrative headquarters of the Betula shoe brand and Birko Orthopädie.

Remains of the castle at Leyen

In the 19th century the ruins were torn down by stone robbery except for some foundation walls , a remnant of the curtain wall and a remains of the tower. The remaining remnants were integrated into the new building.
