The Scharrenstraße ( Latvian Skārņu iela ) is a street in the Latvian capital Riga .

It is located in Riga's old town and runs as a pedestrian zone from Kalkstraße ( Kaļķu iela ) to the southeast, until it meets Weberstraße ( Audēju iela ) after a distance of 225 meters . Johannisstraße joins on the northern side near the eastern end .

The street was built at the beginning of the 13th century and at that time formed the core of the German settlement. A first documentary mention comes from the year 1408. The name Scharren goes back to the butcher shops that were operated here at times.

There are several church buildings on Scharrenstrasse, such as the Petrikirche , the Johanniskirche and the Georgskirche , which today houses the Museum of Decorative Art and Design . Other listed buildings are the residential complex Scharrenstrasse 4, 6, 8 as well as the Eckens Konvent at the address Scharrenstrasse 20 and 22. East of Scharrenstrasse 22 on the north side of the street there is a gateway to the Convent of the Holy Spirit . On the south side of Scharrenstrasse in front of the Petrikirche is the sculpture Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten .
