Schattentantz was a German medieval metal band from Wiesbaden .

history

The band Schattentantz was founded in Wiesbaden in 1999 by Max Schilling, Dominik Oelke and Frederik Ehmke. From the beginning, the aim of the stylistic direction was to “combine musically modern with medieval elements”.

After a few concerts, including as the opening act for the Last Instance , the first album Galgenfrist was released in spring 2001 , which received numerous positive reviews (including in Rock Hard magazine ). In 2002, parallel to the original concept of the metal band, a purely acoustic program was developed, which has since been presented at medieval markets , live role-playing games and similar events. The CD Narrenfrei , released in 2005, only contains pieces from this repertoire.

Further appearances followed, including with Schandmaul , Saltatio Mortis , Schelmish and Paddy Goes To Holyhead . In order to give the concerts even more expression and a more varied effect, the appearance in medieval clothing was finally made an integral part of the stage show.

The year 2005 brought two decisive developments for the band with regard to the line-up: a new singer replaced the previous frontman and Frederik Ehmke was hired as a drummer for Germany's renowned metal band Blind Guardian . In 2006 the band was therefore expanded to include an additional drummer who represents Frederik on the drum set when he is on the road with Blind Guardian and otherwise plays a separate small drum kit as a percussionist. This line-up can be heard on the current release Zeitwanderer (2008), on which the musicians present themselves as a medieval metal band with their own compositions .

In April 2009 Schattentantz gave one last concert, previously they had announced the breakup of the band on their website.

Music genre

In addition to the typical instruments of the rock and metal music styles (electric guitar, bass, drums), medieval instruments such as bagpipes, shawms and hurdy-gurdy are used. There are also bouzouki, acoustic guitars, cello and flutes.

The polyphonic choirs are an essential part of almost all songs and can also be heard in several pure a cappella pieces. With the exception of a few adaptations of traditional texts and melodies, the song material consists largely of original compositions.
