rock granite

The Schauerberg is a 767 m high granite mountain in the Hohen Fichtel Mountains ( Bavaria ), in the Kössein massif south of the district town of Wunsiedel . On the north side of the mountain top is an abandoned granite quarry.

geology

On the surface of the highest rock one finds strange weathering phenomena of the granite, which leave the impression of a cracked hard bark. Experts speak of the "turtle pattern" here. The mountain is better known because of its earlier granite quarrying. Now nature has recaptured the abandoned quarry with a small pond.

history

The mountain is documented in 1499 in the land register of the six offices in the description of the rain in the village of Breitenbrunn ("Praitenprun"), now part of the city of Wunsiedel and in 1673/1683 in the description of the judicial offices. The interpretation of the name is unclear.
