Schear-Jaschub
Shear-Jaschub is the name of the firstborn son Isaiah in the Jewish Tanakh and Christian Old Testament .
etymology
The name Shear-Jaschub ( Hebrew שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב schə'ār jāschûv ) is a sentence that is used as a proper name. שְׁאָר schə'ār means “rest”, יָשׁוּב jāschûv is derived from the verb schuv “to reverse”. It can be interpreted as a shortened relative clause without a relative pronoun, depending on “remainder”, resulting in the meaning “a remainder that returns / reverses”. But if, what is more likely, the name is understood as a simple sentence name consisting of subject and predicate, then “[only] a remainder / remnant will turn around / return” can be translated. This sentence order (subject - predicate) differs from the natural sentence order in Hebrew (predicate - subject), which gives the subject a special emphasis.
The Septuagint gives the name as καταλειφθεὶς ιασουβ kataleiftheis iasub .
biography
Shear-Jaschub is mentioned as the firstborn son of the prophet Isaiah in Isa 7,3 EU . His brother Maher-Schalal-Hasch-Bas , who like him has a symbolic name, appears in Isa 8,1-4 EU . It is only reported that Isaiah is supposed to go to Ahaz together with Shear-Jashub . To what extent this represents a symbolic act and whether this predicts salvation or disaster is controversial.
