Scheila Gonzalez (born August 5, 1971 in Los Angeles ) is an American multi-instrumentalist and music teacher . She is best known as a saxophonist but also through appearances with other musicians such as Dweezil Zappa , Alex Acuña and Ray Parker Jr. She plays the tenor saxophone in the jazz orchestra Diva , an all-women orchestra, and performs with various instruments and vocals at Zappa Plays Zappa .

life and work

Gonzalez began taking piano lessons from the age of four and switched to the saxophone at the age of twelve. She plays various woodwind instruments , keyboards and sings. She is the conductor of various jazz groups at the Santa Susana Arts High School in Simi Valley , gives private lessons and is a freelance musician in addition to working on her own albums, tours and performances.

Gonzalez appears with Dweezil Zappa on the Zappa Plays Zappa tour. She has played in this group since it was founded in 2006. During the tour, she received high media praise for her instrumental performances and skills. The show ran through the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. She has appeared on television shows like The Tonight Show . Gonzalez also starred in Christopher Guest's film For Your Consideration .

Awards

Gonzalez won the Shelly Manne Memorial New Talent Award , a prestigious jazz award.
