Scheker ( Kyrgyz and Russian Шекер , also Sheker ) is a place in northwest Kyrgyzstan , near the border with Kazakhstan . The place with 3,573 inhabitants became famous as the birthplace of the famous Kyrgyz writer Tschingis Aitmatow .

location

Scheker is located in the far northwest of Kyrgyzstan in the Talas area and in the Karabuura district . In the north and west of the village is the Kazakh-Kyrgyz border, the region as a whole is characterized by the Talas-Alatau mountains . In the south of Scheker rises the highest mountain of the Talas-Alatau with the 4484.3 meter high Pik Manas. The place itself is located at an altitude of 1167 meters in the northwestern foothills of the Talas valley, which is traversed by the river Talas of the same name .

Infrastructure and sights

The infrastructure in the mountainous and sparsely populated region is barely developed. The regional capital Talas in the east of Scheker is connected to the national trunk road network and can be reached by bus from Scheker. There are two mosques in the city, one of which dates from the 18th or 19th century , while the second mosque is a much more recent construction.

The most famous son of the city and one of the most famous Kyrgyz people in general, the writer Tschinigs Aitmatow, is characteristic of the place. In 1978 a small museum was set up in Scheker on the occasion of the 50th birthday of the writer. There is also a small collection of statues depicting figures from Aitmatov's works. Aitmatov's relatives still live in Scheker today, and they occasionally offer tours for tourists.
