The Schell Creek Range is a mountain range in the east of Nevada / USA . It is centrally located in White Pine County . It extends in a north-south direction for about 212 km. Most of the mountain range is in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Part of the mountain range is in the High Schells Wilderness reserve .

The area comprises two large groups of summit regions. The southern region rises near Burnt Peak in Lincoln County and reaches the summit of Mount Grafton at an altitude of 3,350 m. North of Mount Grafton, the mountain range falls rapidly to an altitude of lower peaks and finally reaches the Convert Connors Pass at an altitude of 2354 m . Here runs US Route 50 through the mountains. It connects the city of Ely with the Great Basin National Park . Utah / USA finally begins to the east of this .

Within the Schell Creek Range is the Cave Lake State Park and the panoramic road over the Success Summit into the Duck Creek Basin . The ridge continues to climb and reaches South Schell Peak at 3592 m, Taft Peak at 3577 m and North Schell Peak. The North Schell Peak is the highest peak in the Schell Creek Range with a height of 3622 m.

The Schell Creek Range consists primarily of limestone, sandstone, conglomerate and tuff. The age of the sedimentary rocks indicates an age of approx. 36 million years.

Flora and fauna

The mountain region is rich in elk , mule deer and mountain lions . You will find an excellent habitat in forests consisting of quivering poplars , Douglas firs , silver firs , Engelmann spruces and pines . Golden eagles take advantage of the updrafts along the ridge of the Schell Creek Range. Alluvial forests are an important habitat for pheasants and many other species. Countless streams throughout the area support rainbow and brown trout populations .

Protected area

In 2006 the Congress of the United States declared the High Schells Wilderness with a total area of ​​492 km² a protected area. The reserve is administered by the US Forest Service. The reserve is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System . With 445,000 km², this covers almost 4.5% of the area of ​​the USA and currently contains 765 protected areas.

Leisure activities such as hiking, climbing, kayaking and canoeing, rafting, horse riding, bird watching, astronomical observation are allowed. Motorized activities, however, are prohibited.

Archaeological sites can also be found in the Schell Creek Range within the High Schells Wilderness. There are rock paintings (petroglyphs) and stone artifacts from prehistoric cultures.
