The Cave Lake State Park is a State Park 25 km southeast of Ely in White Pine County , Nevada. The recreation area is on the US Highway 50 / 6 / 93 and the Success Summit Road to reach and is situated in the mountain range of the Schell Creek Range , surrounded by the nature reserves of the High Schell Wilderness and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest . The water area of the dammed lake is 13 hectares and is 2240  m above sea level. Under the White Pine County Lands Act , the site was expanded from 5 km² to 16.83 km² in May 2007.

The first artificial dam was built as early as the 1940s to serve as a water reservoir for a cattle farm. Around 20 years later, the State Department of Wildlife purchased the property and raised the dam high enough to create a fish-stocked lake . In 1965 a small campground was created and in 1973 the state park was designated. A second camping site followed in 1989 and the park attracts 100,000 visitors per year.

The forest areas best of aspen , pinyon pine , juniper bushes , Prunus virginiana and willows along the Cave Creek , which flows into the lake and the Steptoe Creek into which the lake drains. Nudibranch jays , magpies, tits, nuthatches and Andean treecreepers populate the forests as well as elk , white-tailed deer and puma .

In the summer months the lake is ideal for swimming, boating and fishing, the largest and heaviest fish in all of Nevada were caught, a brown trout weighing 12.4 kg holds the record. In winter the region is cold enough to freeze the lake. The White Pine Fire and Ice Show has been held every January since 2005, a competition for snow and ice sculptures on the frozen lake with fireworks at the end. In 2009 the event was merged with the centenary of the steam engine # 93 , a well-preserved local railway with a steam locomotive.
