The Great Basin National Park [ ˌgreɪt ˈbeɪsən ] is located in eastern Nevada not far from the Utah border in White Pine County . The name comes from the desert of the Great Basin (Engl. Great Basin ), a dischargeless valley between the Sierra Nevada to the west and the Rocky Mountains is in the east.
The park is known for the occurrence of the long-lived pine ( Pinus longaeva ), which is the oldest known living creature (see for example: Prometheus ); also for the Lehman Caves , a stalactite cave at the foot of the Wheeler Peak .
Significant for the establishment of the park in the 1980s was the commitment of the then MP in the United States House of Representatives , Harry Reid .
