The Haleakala National Park is a national park of the USA on the island of Maui in Hawaii . Haleakalā is a dormant volcano that last erupted around 1790.

The national park was established in 1916 as part of the Hawaiʻi National Park . In 1961 , the area was separated from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and administered independently. The park has been an international biosphere reserve since 1980 .

crater

The huge crater of the 3,055 meter high Haleakalā volcano has an extension of 49 km². The crater is actually a large basin with several volcanic cones and thick layers of ash and pumice, washed out by heavy rainfall over thousands of years .

Many visitors come to the summit in the morning to watch the spectacular sunrise. Even more visitors enjoy the equally fascinating sunsets. A very well developed road leads to the summit. There are many attractive views along the way.

Several hiking trails lead through the crater, which also lead to the three simple accommodations ( wilderness cabins : Holua, Kapalaoa, Paliku) and the two campsites.

Kipahulu

The second section of the national park, located on the coast, is called Kīpahulu . Since it is not possible to get there from the summit of Haleakalā, the visitor has to use a winding coastal road. The drive from Kahului to Kīpahulu via the Road to Hāna is an attraction in itself and takes about 4 hours. Starting from the Kīpahulu Visitor Center, an hour-long hike takes you to Waimoku Falls , a 100-meter waterfall. Another attraction is the more than two dozen ponds along the Palikea Stream, which are used as welcome refreshment by many visits.
