Schelmenturm in Ammerschwihr

The rogue tower (French Tour des fripons ), also known as the Tower of Thieves (French Tour des voleurs ), in Ammerschwihr , a French commune in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region , was built around 1367 and modified in 1535. The round fortified tower on the corner of Grand Rue and Route du Vin was added to the list of listed buildings ( Base Mérimée ) in France in 1931 as Monument historique .

description

The round tower was built over a high sandstone base as part of the second fortress wall, presumably in place of an older tower from around 1367. The three floors of the tower are separated by cornices . There are eye-catching loopholes on the two lower floors . A conical roof protects the walls.

The tower also served as a prison in the 17th and 18th centuries .
