Rail car is a name for rail-bound road vehicles .

Even today there are road vehicles with rail chassis. These are z. B. Delivery vans for overhead line maintenance , excavators , fire engines and trucks . In the past, trucks and buses had roughly the same axle width as standard-gauge rail vehicles. Therefore, the road wheels could be replaced by rail wheels. In Spain , thanks to the broad gauge , this method is still used today - especially for the maintenance of overhead lines and track systems.

If such a vehicle is used for railway service purposes, it can also be referred to as a motorized trolley .
