Kuwait National Rail Road (KNNR)

The Ministry of Communications (MoC) plans to build a railroad linking Kuwait City to Kuwait Airport , the seaports and the other states of the Gulf Cooperation Council . The rail network will be 511 kilometers long and double-track will be expanded. It should be able to be used by freight trains as well as passenger trains. The regional trains should run at 120 km / h, the long-distance trains at 200 km / h. The operator model should be Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT). Freight traffic is said to be the most important branch of the business and generate 70% of the income.

In the first phase of the project, a 111 km long route from the city to Nuwaiseeb in the south on the border with Saudi Arabia is to be built. Another 153 kilometers long route is to connect the city with the new port on Bubiyan . The two routes are expected to cost $ 3 billion. The track should be completed in 2023. At the moment there are still obstacles in the implementation of the project due to farms and private property that stand in the way of the proposed route. The relevant government agencies involved in the project also had to ensure that the route did not conflict with existing oil installations. The original plan was to start construction in 2018, but the start of construction work was postponed to 2018. The low oil price makes it difficult to finance the project.

The line from Kuwait City to the border with Saudi Arabia is part of the 2177 km long Gulf Railway - a project that is to connect the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council with one another. It runs from Kuwait via Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to Oman . Branch lines connect Bahrain and Qatar . The routes should be completed in 2023.
