Rail transport in Oman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rail transport in Oman is currently being prepared by the government of the Sultanate of Oman . For this purpose, a railway company , the Oman Rail Company SAOC ("Oman Rail"), was founded as a state-owned company in 2014 , which is to concretise and advance the plans for an approx. 2000 km long route network. In May 2016 it was announced that the project will not continue to operate for the time being. At the end of August 2016, voices were raised that the project appears to be continuing. Work is scheduled to begin in 2018 [obsolete] .

target

The goal is a railway network of 2,135 km in length, which is to be designed for 220 km / h in passenger and 120 km / h in freight traffic. The railroad is expected to lead to a significant increase in the export of industrial minerals from Oman in freight transport . By switching transport from road to rail, the volume of freight traffic can be increased tenfold and the sometimes chaotic traffic situation on the road that arises when several hundred trucks drive up to load a ship in the port can be eliminated . Oman Rail is striving to use rotary tippers for the quick unloading of freight cars . Open freight cars are used, which are then rotated and tipped out by the rotary tipper for unloading.

Also passengers between the population centers of Oman and economic development zones is planned.

Cross-border connections to the United Arab Emirates , the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council and - later - Yemen are to be built. Border crossings are planned in Buraimi and Chatmat Milaha . In order to achieve the best possible interoperability of the railway systems, the parameters of the railway network being developed in the United Arab Emirates are used.

Tenders

In order to implement the first stages of these projects, a series of calls for tenders was published in May 2015 . The aim is for contracts for detailed planning, control, procurement and the execution of construction and assembly work (so-called engineering-procurement-construction contracts - EPC).

Hafeet-Dhahirah

The final design and the complete construction of section 2 of the overall project, the 230 km long Hafeet – Dhahirah railway line, was put out to tender . It should lead from the border with the United Arab Emirates to the planned special economic zone in Dhahirah . The substructure and superstructure , stations , depot and other systems with the associated technical systems are to be commissioned. Oman Rail reserves the right to extend the tender so that the company that wins the contract would look after a route length of 1114 km, which would correspond to more than half of the planned total route length of the entire project.

Thamrait-Salalah

A second tender concerns the pre-qualification for companies who want to build the 93 km long Thamrait – Salalah railway line .

Shuwaymiyah / Manji-Duqm

Another 375 km long stretch is to lead from the gypsum mining in Shuwaymiyah and from Manji to the port of Duqm . In addition, 5 million tons of gypsum and 1 million tons of oil extraction equipment are to be transported annually .

was standing

In May 2016, the Omani Ministry of Transport announced that the project was currently on hold. Due to the current low level of government revenue, due to the price of oil, Oman cannot finance this large project. At the end of August 2016, voices were raised that the project appears to be continuing.
