Shipping clerk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The shipping clerk is a trader trained in shipping .

The training to become a shipping clerk is usually 3 years, but can be shortened to 2½ or 2 years. The tasks include the organization of all kinds of goods transports that go by sea. Shipping merchants work in liner shipping companies, tramp shipping companies or in ship brokers. You are in worldwide contact with customers, suppliers, shipboard personnel and all other service providers in the maritime and port industry. The training can focus on either liner shipping or tramp shipping .

In Germany, the shipping clerk receives theoretical and practical instruction in dual training. He starts as a trainee in a shipping company, a ship brokerage or with a line agent and attends a corresponding vocational school once or twice a week . In some schools, lessons are given in blocks .

Shipping merchants practice one of the oldest land-based professions in shipping . The shipping clerk usually focuses on one of the following areas:

  • Ship brokerage
  • Buying and selling broker (mediates the sale of seagoing vessels, i.e. he mediates between potential buyers and sellers, similar to a real estate agent )
  • Freighting agent (brings ship and larger loads, such as bulk and project loads, together, negotiates contracts, such as booking notes or charter parties, takes care of loading and unloading)
  • Clearing agent (line or tramp), takes care of the handling of the ocean-going vessel in the port, i.e. he orders service providers such as tugs, mooring lines, pilots, etc. He takes care of the ship (repairs, equipment) and crew (visits to the doctor, dressing and dismantling, hotels , Tickets))
  • Liner agent (local representative of a liner shipping company . His job is to acquire export cargo, if necessary to arrange pre-transport, to take care of loading and documentation, to notify import cargo to the recipients, to arrange the unloading and for the delivery to the rightful recipient.)

There are shipping merchants all over the world (mostly in a seaport ), the areas of responsibility are similar, the business language is English. As a result, they can be used geographically very flexibly (globally) (or choose an appropriate location). The profession of shipping clerk is closely related to that of shipping clerk .
