The Maritime Museum Stavanger ( Norwegian : Stavanger maritime museum ) is a museum in the Norwegian city of Stavanger .

It is located at Strandkaien 22 on the west side of the port of Vågen . The address of the back of the building is Nedre Strandgate 17 and 19 .

history

It was founded in 1926 on the initiative of the local shipowners' association, seaman's association and the Stavanger Museum . From 1926 to 1985 it was housed in the Stavanger Museum building at Muségaten 16 . It then moved to its current location in 1985. For this purpose, historical warehouses belonging to the city of Stavanger from the period 1770 to 1840 were rebuilt from the early 1980s. The reopening took place in May 1985. The corresponding restoration work prompted the awarding of the Europa Nostra Prize to the museum.

Up until the beginning of the 20th century, ships could go right up to the merchants' houses and handle goods. However, today's quays and streets were built that separate the buildings from the water. To the rear, towards Nedre Strandgate , are the main buildings of the complex with apartments, offices and a general store. The terraced gardens belonging to the complex and the Groombrønnen are still west of this on the other side of the street.

Exhibitions and facilities

In the museum, the development of shipping, but also of shipbuilding and trade, especially since the beginning of the 19th century, is a theme. In addition to maritime collections, the office of a shipping company , the apartment of a merchant, a grocer from 1900 and the interior of a cabin are shown.

The museum has a collection of around 48,300 historical photographs from the period between 1895 and 1960 with a focus on maritime subjects. There are also around 6,000 technical drawings from the local shipyards Stavanger Støberi & Dok and Rosenberg Mekanisk Verksted, as well as ships used in the region.

The Maritime Museum also owns two historic ships. The Anna af Sand is a sloop built in Hardanger in 1848 . The other ship is the Yacht Wyvern, built in 1897 .

As a state authority, the museum is also responsible for the protection of underwater cultural monuments in Rogaland .

The museum has a café and a museum shop.
