The company was founded in 1836 by the Schweers family. It was initially engaged in boat building, and since 1935 also in shipbuilding . More rescue cruisers followed with their daughter boats. This type of ship, of which around 25 ships were built at the shipyard, became a domain for the shipyard. Customs and police boats, ferries for Tunisia as well as some icebreakers and motor yachts up to 60 meters in length were built.

In July 2001, the shipbuilding and shipyard Schweers was the Lürssenwerft taken until its closure in early 2011 as Lürssen Bardenfleth out. In August 2012 the Fassmer shipyard took over the site; it thus expanded its facilities in Berne.
