Schinkel tabernacle from Wartenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schinkel Tabernacle of Wartenburg from Fer de Berlin was part of a network of monuments for the fallen of the Wars of Liberation , which King Friedrich Wilhelm III. donated. It's in Wartenburg .

description

The monument to the victorious battles against Napoleon was designed in the form of a Gothic tabernacle from 1817-1818 by the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry . The monument is approx. 6 m high and weighs 3.5 t. It was crowned by an iron cross , whose design, e.g. B. as an order, also goes back to Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The epitaph was deliberately chosen to be simple:

The fallen
heroes gratefully honor the
king and
fatherland.
You rest
in peace.
Wartenburg
October 3rd, 1813.

history

On October 3, 1863, 50 years after the battle, the monument was erected in memory of the Battle of Wartenburg in Wartenburg . Veterans of the battle could even be greeted at the ceremony to commemorate the unveiling. In the early 1960s, the heavily rusted memorial was torn down and replaced by a memorial stone designed by Erich Viehweger on October 3, 1963 - on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the battle. Only the tip of the Iron Cross was preserved and was exhibited on March 17, 2007 in a LEADER project behind a rusty wall right next to the York monument in the York Garden in Wartenburg.
