The Schiffbauergasse is a cultural and commercial location in Potsdam district of Berlin suburb on the banks of the deep lake .

history

The Schiffbauergasse was still largely undeveloped in the 17th century and was therefore called Potsdambsches Stopelfeld . A year later, the Schiffbauergasse was characterized by early industrial, then highly modern developments, because the native Englishman John Barnett Humphreys began building steamships under the supervision of the royal Prussian government in 1817 and that's how the location got its name. In 1819, the great steamship ran the Prince Blucher with a length of 61 meters from the stack . Because of narrow and shallow waterways and financial bottlenecks, the shipyard was closed in 1821. From 1839 to 1842, Friedrich Wilhelm III. the construction of a barracks for the Guard Hussar Regiment next to the riding arena. Over 600 hussars were accommodated in one building and 18 men each in 50 m² rooms.

On October 1, 1856, the newly built gas works of the Berlin entrepreneur Julius Conrad Freund went into operation, until July 1, 1990, gas, coke and tar were produced for Potsdam. In addition, the chicory mill was built by Ferdinand Biermann in 1856 and closed again in 1907. In 1880/82, the Royal Garrison Steam Laundry, better known today as the wash house, was built according to the plans of building officer Bernhardt and garrison construction inspector Bohm . After the Second World War , Schiffbauergasse was enlarged by around 10,000 m² in 1949 and 1950. After the rubble was cleared from Potsdam, the rubble was distributed from the banks of Türkstrasse to Papenhorn. After 1945, the Soviet armed forces use the barracks buildings and most of them are handed over to the National People's Army of the GDR .

After the political change in 1991, the gas works was shut down. The military troops later withdrew. Little by little, the buildings previously used for cavalry and industry moved in numerous cultural institutions and it was made accessible to the public again. In 1992, Professor Gottfried Böhm won the international architecture competition with his design for the new Potsdam theater building. In 1999, the city council decided to build the new theater on the site of Schiffbauergasse as part of an integrated cultural and commercial site. In 1993 the factory Potsdam - International Center for Dance and Movement Art moved to Schiffbauergasse and in 1998 opened the machine hall as a dance house. In 2005 the Volkswagen Design Center Potsdam GmbH settled in Schiffbauergasse, in 2006 the T-WERK in Schirrhof , and KunstRaum Potsdam in Schirrhof. On September 22nd, 2006, the curtain of the new Hans Otto Theater on Schiffbauergasse, directly on the banks of the Tiefen See, opened for the first time .

building

Schinkelhalle

The Schinkelhalle is one of the oldest buildings in Schiffbauergasse and is a listed building. Because the hall was completed in 1823 according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and was part of the originally H-shaped riding stables. From 1822 it was built on the site of the Garrison Holzhof, and has a length and width of 40 meters × 18.2 meters. The Schinkelhalle is equipped with an open roof truss made of solid pine beams, because the installation of central supports, which would have been a hindrance for a riding arena, could be avoided. It was refurbished in accordance with listed buildings and is used as an event hall for concerts, events and large-scale events.

Riding arena A

Reithalle A (Hans Otto Theater)

There are four listed riding arenas on the barracks area. Riding hall A was built in 1915 according to the plans of the architect Robert Klingelhöffer, Royal Building Councilor in Heeres-Bauamt II, as a fourth hall, on the occasion of the army reinforcement and was built in neoclassical style. Large self-supporting steel girders span the hall and are 26.5 meters wide. The children's and youth theater of the Hans Otto Theater has been housed in this building since 1998. The former modern cowshed, which was used to slowly cool down heated horses from training, is now used as a foyer.

Riding arena B

At that time the riding arena was used for acting and dance theater through the use of T-Werk and Fabrik Potsdam. Today the rehearsal stage of the Hans Otto Theater is housed here.

Riding stables at the Schirrhof

A large complex of riding stables belonged to the former Gardehusar barracks, which is connected to the Schinkelhalle via a connection. The function of the buildings can still be read from numerous preserved details. The already renovated, listed riding stables at Schirrhof are home to the T-Werk and the Potsdam art space. The second construction phase was completed in autumn 2007. After the construction there will be the dance studio, the private art museum Fluxus Plus , together with the "action hall" for this a foyer area, plus commercial space for various purposes, such as an organic fresh market, for cultural companies and associations.
