Schirrhof

Schirrhof refers to business premises with buildings and open spaces. Schirrhöfe usually had tasks in the context of operation, repair and maintenance, the spectrum of which was specified by the operator.

etymology

The etymology of Schirrhof goes back to places that were originally used for the tension of draft animals . The name is derived from the harness used by draft animals. After the disappearance of animals in business premises, the term for business premises with a lot of equipment (dishes) continued to be used. In the 21st century the term is used both for places and facilities with historical reference as well as for actual business premises.

Schirrhof in the 19th and 20th centuries

In the 19th century, Schirrhöfe were known as larger operating and maintenance facilities. In the 20th century, the need for Schirrhöfe decreased due to the onset of motorization of traffic:

Schirrhof in the 21st century

The name Schirrhof can be found in town and street names in the 21st century. One finds the name in the vicinity of ports, canals or other bodies of water, such as in Minden "Am Schirrhof" Norderney "Am Alten Schirrhof" in Gorleben the "Schirrhofstraße" and in Cuxhaven "Schirrhof" as a street name .
Schirrhof in terms of official offices continues to exist in a few cases - however, the term "building yard " is more widespread.
