The Schirmacher Ponds are a scattered group of meltwater pools on the Princess Astrid Coast of Queen Maud Land in East Antarctica . They are 60 km north of the Alexander von Humboldt Mountains in the Schirmacher Oasis .
Participants in the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher discovered it. Ritscher named the entire area after his pilot Richardheinrich Schirmacher (1909 - unknown) as the Schirmacher Lake District . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names subdivided the property in 1966 into the Schirmacher Oase ( English Schirmacher Hills ) and the pools described here.
