Schirmau is a living space on the municipal area of the municipality Schalkenbach in the district of Ahrweiler ( Rheinland-Pfalz ).

history

It is believed that Schirmau was already a settlement in pre-Roman times. The old Kohlstrasse, on which the coal was brought from the Eifel to the Rhine, could be guarded from Schirmau . According to Leisen, when the foundations for the new mansion were being excavated in 1909/10, Roman foundation walls were discovered that have not been documented. A Roman bathing complex was discovered during construction work in 1957.

The continuity of the settlement has not been proven. In 1624, the farm was named "Schirmauel" in a document and in 1669 the residential area was referred to as a village.

The population for Schirmau was:

year Residents
1804 10
1869 13
1894 8th
1906 7th

From the village of Schirmau to the Schirmau forest estate

In 1905 Max von der Leyen bought the farm with the fields and forests from Johann Porz and his wife Maria Gertrud. After the old houses were demolished, Max von der Leyen had a mansion with outbuildings built between 1910 and 1918.

Only a half-timbered house from the 18th century that is protected as a cultural monument remains of the old residential area . It has been completely renovated and is used for meetings.
