description

Vegetative characteristics

Schizanthus parvulus is a very tender annual plant that grows to 25 to 75 cm tall. Their stems have a diameter of 1.0 to 1.5 mm and are only slightly leafy. The plant is slightly woolly hairy, in the hair there are also some glandular trichomes that are longer than the rest of the hair and have a small, light-colored gland. The leaves have a flower stalk that is 1 to 2 mm long in the area of the inflorescence , otherwise 4 to 9 mm long. The leaf blade is split pinnately and thus divided into seated, opposite and widely spaced segments. The segments themselves are pointed with their entire margins, rarely pinnate. In the lower part of the plant, the leaves are larger and then up to 70 mm long and 13 mm wide, in the flower area they are only 20 to 25 mm long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences consist of one to two main axes with seven to eleven flowers and contain 1 to 7 mm long bracts . The flower stalk is 7 to 18 mm long and increases to 18 to 35 mm on the fruit. The calyx is 2 to 3 mm long and extends to 6 to 7 mm on the fruit. The sepals themselves are linearly pointed and covered with numerous glandular hairs. The crown is 7 to 10 mm long and wide, its corolla tube is 1.5 mm long and straight. The upper lip is purple or slightly purple in color and has no yellow spot, but a white tip. The lower lip is colored white. The middle section of the upper lip is 4.5 to 6 mm long and pointed or oblong pointed. The lateral sections of the upper lip are 9 to 10 mm long and have only a few pointed sections, but these can only be slightly incised. The lower lip consists of a 4.0 to 5.5 mm long, pointed or elongated pointed middle section and 6 to 7.5 mm long, linearly elongated lateral sections that are slightly curved.

The anthers are 1.8 to 2.0 mm long and light green in color. The stamens are 3.5 to 4.0 mm long. The staminodes are thread-like and attached to a bulging violet membrane on the upper lip. The stylus has a length of 5 to 7 mm.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are capsules . They contain round seeds about 0.9 mm wide and 1.3 mm long . Their color is golden yellow, they are rectangular in rows and structured without honeycomb depressions.

Occurrence

The species is common in the Región de Coquimbo in Chile .
