Battle of Diersheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Diersheim took place from April 20 to 21, 1797 near Diersheim in what is now Baden-Württemberg . There were 48,500 men from France under Jean-Victor Moreau and 24,000 men from Austria under Anton Sztáray von Nagy-Mihaly . Both sides lost about 3,000 soldiers in the battle and Austria also lost 13 cannons . The Austrian General Wilhelm von Immens was killed during the battle and Anton Sztáray was seriously injured. The Battle of Diersheim was actually unnecessary and a waste of life, as Napoleon Bonaparte had signed the Treaty of Leoben three days earlier, which brought about a ceasefire between Austria and France. Despite this problem, Moreau's reputation improved with his hard-won victory.
