The Battle of Mülheim took place in February 1609 as part of the Eighty Years War . It was fought between General State troops under Daniël de Hertaing and Spanish troops on the area of the historic Broich rule . It was the last act of war before April 12, 1609, on which both sides were able to agree on an armistice in Antwerp .
prehistory
The area had been occupied by Spaniards since the battle of Mülheim in 1605, and on February 6, 1607, the brother of Count Johann Adolf von Daun-Falkenstein , Wirich, who was in the service of the general state, was killed by the occupiers near Sterkrade .
course
In February there was a battle between the Spanish and General State mercenary troops. In a kind of street fight, the Dutch under Daniël de Hertaing drove the Spaniards through the village of Mülheim, where they made several hundred prisoners on the church square. More than a hundred Spaniards were able to entrench themselves in the Petrikirche, whereupon their opponents set the houses on the church wall on fire to break their defense.
consequences
On March 8, Prince Moritz of Orange expressed his regret in writing to Count Johann Adolf that his troops had set fire to a number of houses in the village of Mülheim and that he was campaigning for compensation from the States General.
