The war began in 1683 with an offensive by the Ottoman army against Vienna (→ Second Siege of the Turks ). After this was defeated in the Battle of Kahlenberg on September 12, 1683, the combined German-Polish army began a counter-offensive with the conquest of Hungary . Initially, the Polish King John III persecuted . Sobieski and his Polish regiments from September 18, 1683, defeated the Ottoman troops. On October 7th, the advance guard of the Polish army (approx. 2,000 men) was ambushed by the Ottomans, who numbered around 40,000 men, near the Turkish fortress Gran , and were almost completely wiped out. Part of the main Polish contingent (approx. 4,000 Hussaria men ) under the leadership of King Sobieski was attacked and put to flight. The king himself was in mortal danger and was thought to be dead at times.
The following day, more troops under Charles of Lorraine came onto the battlefield. On October 9, Sobieski rearranged the troops that had now arrived in full and the Allies attacked the Ottoman units again. The Ottomans had also drawn together contingents in the meantime, so that the 30,000 of the alliance faced around 40,000 Ottoman fighters.
The result of the battle was a crushing defeat for the Ottomans, from which only about 800 Ottoman soldiers escaped. On the same day the city of Gran was stormed by imperial troops under the Margrave of Baden .
