The battle for Fort Ann was part of the Saratoga campaign in the American Revolutionary War .

The battle took place on July 8, 1777 at Fort Anne , now Fort Ann . The fort was built in 1757 at the confluence of the Halway Creek and Wood Creek Rivers . The battle for the fort was a battle of retreat after the defeat of the American forces in Skenesboro .

The battle

In the run-up to the battle, the Americans managed to get a large group of civilians to safety and to deceive the enemy about the true number of his troops with the help of a false deserter . When the British Colonel Hill got near the fort, he now believed that his troops were clearly outnumbered. Then he waited for reinforcements. When Long found out about the true strength of the British from the same false deserter , he attacked immediately and was able to inflict some losses on the enemy. After two hours the ammunition ran out on both sides, but after the alleged arrival of the British reinforcements, the luck of the battle now tipped in favor of Hills. Believing that the British were now reinforced by a contingent of Indians , the Americans broke off the battle, burned the fort's palisades and withdrew to Fort Edwards . However, the Indian allies had refused to support and only one colonel joined the British.
