The Battle of Treponti , also known as the Battle of Castenedolo , was a clash in the Sardinian War between the Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal Karl von Urban and Giuseppe Garibaldi on June 15, 1859 .
prehistory
In March 1859 Giuseppe Garibaldi invaded the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto with a division of the Cacciatori delle Alpi of 3,000 men . The commander of the Austrian division stationed there , Lieutenant Field Marshal Karl von Urban , saw this as a provocation and decided to attack the Italian volunteers with his soldiers. At Treponti in Lombardy, the imperial family with 4,000 soldiers finally caught up with Garibaldi on June 15, 1859.
The battle
The Italians were not prepared for this attack and the sudden appearance of the Austrian troops caused some panic among the young volunteers. In addition, the terrain near Treponti was very flat, which meant that the Italian mountaineers could not use their advantage.
Garibaldi himself appeared in battle with a band of horsemen, but the inexperienced Italians were unable to push back the Austrian army. After a brief skirmish, the Cacciatori delle Alpi fled and the battle was lost for Garibaldi. On the Italian side, 120 men were killed and another 70 were captured.
consequences
Karl von Urban returned to Austria in triumph; but this small victory could not discourage the Italians and French. It remained with this one victory against the hated Garibaldi; the Franco-Sardinian troops won the battle of Solferino and the Sardinian war was lost for the imperial soldiers.
