The Battle of Varese was a skirmish between Italian volunteers (troop: Cacciatori delle Alpi ) and Austrian troops on May 26, 1859.
prehistory
On May 23, the Italian volunteers of the Cacciatori delle Alpi troop unit (German: Alpenjäger) camped under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi near Varese in Lombardy . Ferencz József Gyulay sent his officer Karl von Urban to retake the area.
The battle
Garibaldi had heard of the Austrians coming and had divided his army into three parts. Two hid in the sides of the plain while he positioned himself in the middle. When Karl Urban and his soldiers marched up in a row, the Italians shot from ambush. The officer believed he was surrounded by a superior force and fled. When retreating, Garibaldi attacked the Austrians in the back, which led to high losses. The battle was decided.
consequences
This victory enabled the troops to advance from Sardinia-Piedmont to Como .
