history

historical city map showing the location of the lock between Stromelbe and Zollelbe

Over the centuries, the course of the Elbe changed several times in the area of the city of Magdeburg. At times there were several river arms . Before the 18th century, the middle of three arms had been the main arm of the river. By floating in the area of the Elbe bridges in Magdeburg, more and more islands were created, which eventually grew together into one, the Great Werder . At the same time, the Stromelbe developed into the main arm, while the middle arm became the Taube Elbe and Zollelbe.

Since the bridge construction, the predecessor of the new river bridge Magdeburg , numerous ship mills and rapids hindered the traffic in the area of the Stromelbe , this was continued to be led over the Zollelbe. For this purpose, a breakthrough , the lock canal, was built between the two river arms in 1743 , after the order to build a lock had been placed in 1739. The associated lock was put into operation in 1747. Furthermore, Magdeburg's harbor was built in the Zollelbe . The lock was in operation until 1889. After the cessation of operations, the lock canal was filled in and the exit from the lock into the Stromelbe was walled up. Remains preserved are the former exit onto the Stromelbe and the associated quay walls .
