The Parey lock is a lock in the Pareyer connecting canal , a descent from the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Elbe , and is located in the Elbe-Parey municipality in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

Havel and Elbe have been important traffic routes since the Middle Ages at the latest. Due to the strong current in the Elbe and to avoid the long detour in the direction of Magdeburg via Havelberg , the construction of the Plauer Canal began after 1743 . This ended at Derben in the Elbe. In order to enable the descent from the canal into the Elbe, a wooden lock, the old Parey lock , was built. Furthermore, in the 19th century, the Ihle Canal was laid out parallel to the Elbe for navigation that was independent of the water level and current. In the course of further expansion, the Plauer Canal and Ihle Canal became the Elbe-Havel Canal. Between 1888 and 1892, the flood protection along the Elbe was improved and Elbe dykes were built. Furthermore, a new estuary was built for the canal to solve silting problems. The old estuary then formed the excavator Elbe . In connection with this, the old Parey lock was replaced by a new two-chamber coupling lock located about one and a half kilometers west in the new estuary.

Building

The Parey lock is located at kilometer PVK 0.80 immediately before it flows into the Elbe. It is a coupling lock with two lock basins one behind the other. These make it possible to overcome large differences in height between the river and the canal when the water levels in the Elbe are low. The usable chamber length over the entire lock is 145 m. If the lock basins are separated by a mitred gate, it is reduced to 70 m in the lock basin on the Elbe and 65 m in the canal side. The chamber width is 8.20 m. The height of fall depends heavily on the current water level in the Elbe and can fluctuate by several meters. As a flood protection measure, the outer head of the lock was fitted with a lift and pivot gate and integrated into the dike . The Elbe-side lock gate has a bidirectional function, ie it can defend against each other, regardless of which side the water is higher, from both the Elbe and the canal. The maximum permissible diving depth when passing the lock is 1.85 m.
