Denise LaSalle (2009)

Denise LaSalle (born on July 16, 1939 as Ora Denise Allen near Sidon , Mississippi ; died on January 8, 2018 in Nashville ) was an American blues , soul and rhythm and blues singer and music producer . In 2011 she was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame of the Blues Foundation .

life and work

She was born in Leflore County , Mississippi , in 1939, the youngest of eight children of Nathaniel and Nancy Allen. From the age of seven she grew up in Belzoni . She sang as a Baptist in the church choir, and when she was about 15 she wrote stories that she was able to sell to Tan and True Confessions magazine . As an adolescent, she moved to Chicago and began writing songs; at the same time she sang in a gospel choir called The Sacred Five. She gave herself the stage name LaSalle because it sounded French.

In 1967 LaSalle released their first recording, A Love Reputation, on the Billy Emerson label . In the following years she had success as a singer, songwriter and producer as well as label and nightclub owner. In 1969 she founded the label Crajon Enterprises with Bill Jones, whom she married in the same year and from whom they separated again in 1974, and wrote Get Your Lie Straight, a hit for Bill Coday , which was released on her label. In 1971/72 she had her first own bigger hit with the song Trapped by a Thing Called Love and with Now Run and Tell That and Man Sized Job two more top 10 titles followed on the R&B charts. At the same time she devoted herself increasingly to country music , and her 1976 song Married But Not to Each Other was successfully covered by country singer Barbara Mandrell .

In 1977, LaSalle married James Wolfe, Jr., with whom she has two children. From 1984 she recorded several albums and singles for Malaco Records in Jackson , with which she was very successful. Nine of the albums recorded by Malaco reached the national charts and the single My Toot Toot 1985 was able to place itself internationally. In 1986 she founded the National Association for the Preservation of the Blues to bring more attention to the soul / blues style. At the same time she wrote songs for other musicians and the Someone Else Is Steppin 'In written for ZZ Hill was a great success for them. For Ann Peebles and Little Milton , she wrote the song Packed Up and Took My Man with Mack Rice , which was later sampled by rapper Ghostface Killah for his hit Walk Around . In 1997 LaSalle left the Malaco label and recorded a gospel album on her own label Angel In the Midst, followed by other albums. In 2008 she returned to Malaco Records. Denise LaSalle died in Nashville on January 8, 2018, at the age of 78.
